HideMyAss (HMA) Pro VPN INTRODUCTION

HideMyAss provides a paid OpenVPN plus PPTP service with a 30 day money back guarantee. For one price all servers and 4,000 IPs. On each connection, HideMyAss provides its users with a different IP. This is a solid service with an easy to use software product and good North American and European server network.

HideMyAss provides the OpenVPN standard with an easy to use software application at the middle of the market price range. HideMyAss has a large number of servers but not enough off shore servers. The application has many features and is simple to set up and use. The Privacy Policy is less than ideal as certain personal data and IPs are logged and stored. This review only covers HideMyAss’s Open VPN service. The other protocol they provide, PPTP, will be reviewed later in the year.

Review Summary

HideMyAss is a solid VPN service with good support, an excellent software tool and larger server network. But privacy is less than ideal as the service logs and caches personal information. But privacy is less than ideal as the service logs and caches personal information and management and the server network is predominantly based in the USA.

HideMyAss Pro VPN PROS:
• Easy to use convenient application
• Unlimited Free switching between servers
• No bandwidth limitation
• Large server network
• In the middle of the market price range
• 30 day money back guarantee
• Fast servers
• Good and attentive support

HideMyAss Pro VPN CONS:
• Few off shore servers
• Management and server network is predominantly located in the USA
• Dynamic IP with no Fixed IPs for using with PayPal & Credit Card merchants
• Only 128 bit encryption (256 could be provided as an alternative)
• Does not support IPv6
• Does not provide a fastest server in the application (only a guide)
• Logs and stores IP, username and email address

Full Review

From Order to Installation: ★★★★½

With HideMyAss your account is up and running within 1 hour if you use PayPal or Google Checkout (in my case it took 15 minutes). I received my login credentials in a few minutes after my Checkout and was able to connect with HideMyAss a few minutes later.
HideMyAss utilizes its own electronic download for the executable application. It runs quickly and there were no problems during the execution. If you permit it to open the application on your desktop at the end of the execution it pops up:

HideMyAss provides you with a convenient icon on your start up menu as well as on your desktop. From the icon you can open the desktop application or exit the VPN program.

Software/GUI: ★★★★½

After download and execution of the HideMyAss program, you open the desktop application and put in your login and user credentials that HideMyAss sent you by email on receipt of payment. The entire procedure was quick and professional. After starting the software:

best-vpn-reviews

The software lets you know your new IP address and the server location and from this Dashboard page you can change country servers, IP address and even schedule a preset IP change at a specific time.

If you change countries it gives you a popup to let you know and then it provides the new IP in a popup as well. You know that you are securely connected when you see the green Connected check mark in the upper right hand corner of the application.

A really useful feature is Secure IP bind. You can add an application to the IP Binding Settings and in the event of any unforeseen disconnect, the applications you set are terminated. This is very useful for those times your ISP goes down and you are on a site or application that you absolutely don’t want to be logged onto your own IP, so at least that application/browser is terminated immediately.

Updates: HideMyAss provides automated updates.

Ease of Use: ★★★★½

Very easy and convenient to use with excellent features.

Features: ★★★★☆

HideMyAss has many excellent features including:
Load balancing settings, easy to select country settings, ability to connect to a random server, change your IP on the fly, schedule an IP address change at a specific time or randomly change your IP every x minutes.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★★☆☆

HideMyAss has a network of servers in 12 countries with OpenVPN. HideMyAss has servers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, Portugal, Russian and Ukraine. Two of the servers are in non-cooperative or off shore jurisdictions so from a security point of view this VPN does provide you with true anonymity (if you use the off shore servers for sensitive activities).

Keep in mind that VPN providers that are based in cooperative jurisdictions and have servers in other cooperative jurisdictions cannot protect your data as it is transmitted across their servers. By definition a court order in cooperative regions can force HideMyAss to log, cache and submit any information to local and international authorities not withstanding HideMyAss’s current Privacy Policy to the contrary. Recently the UK passed very restrictive data retention laws that may, in time, negatively impact on HideMyAss, particularly as they have servers in Cheltenham, the center of the UK’s encryption and anti-terrorism agencies. It would be better if HideMyAss had servers in other off shore jurisdictions as Russia and the Ukraine are long ping times for North American and South American users.

Example server Ping time: HideMyAss Amsterdam, Netherlands server to LA, USA 159 ms ping time.

best-vpn-reviews

Without HideMyAss the ping time was 152ms, so there was little latency (5%) on this server test at 6.30PM EST.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★★½

All presale questions are answered within one hour generally by form emails.

Post-sale support is done by mail (no ticket system but has IRC chat). Their email response was very quick, helpful and comprehensive. Their stated response time is 12-24 hours but I had email responses in a couple of hours.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★★☆

Utilizing standard VPN protocols, HideMyAss changes your IP, removes packet headers and provides you with a dynamic IP generated from any of its servers. Each time you connect, you will receive another IP address. This is good security but it has the downside that if you want to connect to PayPal or to your credit card merchant with a VPN and your IP changes every time you connect, PayPal will likely put your account on hold because they are suspicious of changing IP addresses. Its best to use a VPN that provides both shared and a fixed IP so that you are safe but can deal with your shopping online in a convenient way. That said, if you are not shopping online with HideMyAss, it is a secure VPN.

Protocols: OpenVPN, PPTP

HideMyAss does not support IPv6 or port forwarding. All ports are automatically unblocked but SMTP mail is not permitted.

Encryption: Pending Test

Encryption Strength Specified: 128 Bit AES

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of HideMyAss is to be completed by August 15th and will be posted here then.
Open VPN provides both 128 and 256 Bit AES. HideMyAss choose the less strong encryption standard probably because it’s faster to implement.

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from HideMyAss.

Privacy: ★★★½☆

HideMyAss Privacy Policy states that Username, email address and IP is stored and that VPN IP addresses are also stored. They also say that the data is on their system for 30 days, suggesting, but not stating explicitly that the personal data is then deleted. There is no way to verify what they log and cache.

HMA and its management is located in the USA and has very few off shore servers. To be completely secure, users should consider a VPN provider whose corporate headquarters are off shore to begin with. Many jurisdictions are impervious to US and European court orders. USA VPNs that are prominently located in the US are not secure by definition.

HideMyAss Pro VPN Review Summary

  • SadPanda says:

I used this VPN for a long time and i can say the following

    1. they have bad support, they will answer ONLY when its in their interest…if you have real issues don’t expect much help

    2. their system its flawed and if you used your account for 2 sessions (you are allowed to do that according to their website)
you will end up with your account suspended for using it for 5 sessions…no money back and no answer from their support about that

If you ask yourself how you end up suspended for using just 2 sessions but get suspended for supposedly using 5 sessions, its because their servers will keep disconnect you and keep re-connecting because of the quality of the connections its bad and each re-connect or disconnect will count as an session and because their logs are flawed,
EVEN IF YOU DISCONNECTED FROM A SERVER IT WILL STILL SAY YOU ARE CONNECTED THERE

If you try to explain to them, none will bother to answer or even unblock your account OR refund your money…

So if you want to use 1 account for 2 computers or sessions you better buy 1 account for each computer to avoid suspension and more important to avoid trying to speak with an customer support who doesn’t answer their emails

If you go livehelp they will say they do not handle this kind of situation and that you need to wait an email from their technician which will never come so livehelp its pointless…its mostly for people who have stupid questions to ask…like how to connect and crap like that…not an real livehelp

so be warned…if you see that your connection keep re-connecting stop for a while or you will end up with your account suspended and no money returned or answer from them…
    basically a big scam

i’m using the service just because of the wide variety of IP’s i need for my work
hopefully some other company will do something like this and i will just move there like probably half of HMA client base…tired of the crap they get from HMA every month

suspended accounts with no answer from them or money returned…just because their system its flawed and shows account connected on multiple servers when hes really connected to 1 or 2…

    3. not to mention if you are “lucky” you will get banned for just being at the wrong time on a server used by others for illegal stuff, or not necessary being on a server but connect to an server which its being used for illegal stuff

YOU WILL GET YOUR ACCOUNT DISABLED and you are innocent!!!

few months ago i got one of my accounts disabled for no valid reason…after 1 week of emails and visits to their livehelp they told me i’m banned for using their server for DDOS which i obviously didn’t do it…i prolly just connected to that server and left but yea, wrong time and i got my account disabled just because i was on the same server with someone who did an illegal thing SO BEWARE…

You might end up having problems with authorities just because HMA cant get their logs straight and they can’t make an difference between STILL CONNECTED ON THE SERVER and DISCONNECTED FROM THE SERVER few seconds or 1-2 minutes ago…

Never register with this VPN service. Their 30 day money back guarantee is not what it seems. I used the service for less than 15 days and based on their policy I would only get back a partial refund due to exceeding 10GB in bandwidth which is 10.62GB of total usage. So basically 0.62GB of over usage. Number 1. I never used their service for any uploads or downloads, in fact I hardly used their service during those 15 days plus I never would reach 10GB of usage in 1 month with my local internet provider. So as you can see they can tell you lies as there is no way to check your own usage and you will not get your full money back guaranteed. Based on their policy they will charge you 1 month of service, which is $11.52. Keep in mind I subscribed to a 12 month package which is a monthly fee of $6.55. I would keep sending them email stating if they are going to charge me for 1 month then I should be deducted $6.55 and not $11.52 from my 12 month subscription price. They would take days to email me back. As you can see their support service is terrible. In fact they will never email you back until you keep creating a new ticket whenever you send an email through their login page. I am still in the process of trying to get my money back as it have been over 1 week now and in the process of reporting this company to econsumer.gov. Never sign up for a VPN service that does not have a 24/7 live chat support team. Hide My Ass…People should stay away

    BUYERS BEWARE!

Will NOT REFUND You even though it claims to do so. You need to get your bank to force a chargeback, no other choice!

    BUYERS BEWARE!

The VPN Service will LOG and track all your activities. LOGS ARE KEPT UP TO 2 YEARS! Which is more than any ISP.

    BUYERS BEWARE!

Speed is unreliable. At times ok speed but plenty of times I faced slowdown. NOT GOOD for streaming.

    BUYERS BEWARE!

No Privacy! They gave up a Lulzsec member to Law Enforcement!

    BUYERS BEWARE!

Poor Support ignore several of my emails about service issues, until I request refund then only they respond and told me lots of nonsense which in end means NO REFUND! despite that I only subscribed for 2 weeks.

This is a decent VPN with a great interface. Lots of bells & whistles most of which are not very useful but look nice.

The VPN is slow. It never came out ahead of another VPN I tested and sometimes was 50% slower.

I requested a refund under their 30 day 100% refund policy. That service is also very very slow. No refund although they charged my account in a matter of minutes.

If speed is not an issue for you then this is a good VPN. Service was good too until it came to asking for a refund.

Rubbish, slow speed and worse they log everything, every tiny little thing. Also according to their site they may keep logs up to 2 years! Which is more then even my ISP which told me they kept for 6 months max.

They also are a snitch company giving up lulzsec member to authorities. Very questionable vpn service.

Now why would anyone join this service? They are like the big brother only worse!

  • I purchased a 1 month gig just to try it out. After about a week fooling around with it I’m left with mixed feelings. I can normally snag 850k downloads barefoot. With HMA, the highest download rate I’ve achieved so far is 700. Now, I could live with that, but it’s not consistant. In fact, HMA download speeds seem to fluctuate greatly from time to time. I live in the SW USA and there are a dozen servers within a few hundred miles – speed varies greatly among these servers. I don’t mind sacrificing a little speed for anonymity, but bandwidth is expensive and my time has to be worth something. I don’t know. I’ll continue to use it at least until the end of the month…we’ll see.

  • JoeAdams says:

HMA can not keep it’s story straight on what it logs:

    http://forum.hidemyass.com/index.php?/topic/2843-why-i-would-never-use-hide-my-ass-vpn/
“What data we collect: We will store a time stamp and IP address when you connect and disconnect to our Site. We do not store details of, or monitor, web traffic data for each VPN session, including but not limited to, details of website URL’s you have visited or the protocols you have used.”

In other words, they just said they do not log the websites you access. But in their terms of service they say they do log the websites you access.

    http://hidemyass.com/proxy/tos/
“Website access logs are logged for a maximum of 30 days, these are logs generated by the Apache web server which include your IP address and date/time of all files and websites accessed through our web proxy.”

They also contradict the 30 days and I have read on multiple occasions their staff stating that they routinely keep logs 18 months and reserve the option to keep logs as long as they wish. I will gladly find that quote for you if anyone asks.

Also, everything HMA has said in defense of them turning over the information to the government has been a distortion of the truth. They state that by law they have to turn information to the government but what they are not saying is that if they didn’t log the information and keep the information for months, the government could not legally acquire it. So in reality it is HMA is solely responsible for the government having this information and not the court order. Considering the amount of the time it takes the government to get a court order, there is no excuse for the logs to still even being there.

Also, listen to what HMA says about turning over the logs. They never once complained or said that this is a government intrusion of privacy. Google even fought giving logs to the government as well as other companies in the past because of individual privacy concerns. But HMA takes a different attitude. They state that you have no right to break any laws and that if you do, they will cooperate with law enforcement. So this being the case, what is the difference between HMA and the law enforcement? Why don’t they just put their headquarters at the police station?

The VPN is rubbish. The problems started about 2 months ago. Connecting takes ages you, have to reconnect several times and at the end it will break connection and restore the original one after few minutes. On 90% of servers the traffic is very high, the support is non existing, only bright side is the easy use but that’s all. Don’t buy it ure gonna be dissapointed. I took up their service as a trial. But when I didn’t think that they’re service was great – the speed or the technical help, I chose to leave.

So within a few hours, after battling with technical support over why speeds were so slow I asked for a refund.

They now tell me – Sorry but you’ve exceeded the limit. Their limit is 10gb before you cannot receive a refund – but my downloaded usage was 2gb but upload was 50gb!?!?!?

They have clearly declined my request for a refund.

Ever wonder why HMA get all positive reviews on some sites while other websites have mixed positive and negative reviews??

Ever think that maybe those websites that give all positive reviews are engineered by the vendor themselves? meaning they populate the review with postive reviews themselves. And if you post a negative review, you dont see your review at all?? No brainer. The review site is owned by the product owner themselves! Stay away.

Pay MORE attention to negative reviews and determine if the negative reviews have merit. If so, dont buy the product. Simple as that.

This site seems impartial because of mixed reviews.

I have tried to log in to my account and now it is gone. So they kept my money AND deleted my account. Scandalous.

Totally useless. Gave my information to the RCMP without a court order . All it took was one letter to HMA in the UK and they turned over all my info. to the RCMP without a court order ( the RCMP failed to get a court order in front of a Judge- it was denied). And the “allegations” of the RCMP were minor. We are talking about “defamatory libel” against RCMP officers. We are not talking about major crime here either. The charges so corrupt they were dropped at the preliminary trial.
HMA logs, they can track you easily and will give up your information. They gave my information on a letter request alone. The RCMP letter also outlined the “supposed crimes” and they were all of minor consequences.

After its clear they log users and have no problem to reveal details to fbi and interpol this service is totally useless for anybody who want privacy because company is US located. If you lookin for service that allow u change ip to join again your favourite forum where u become banned or want to watch internet TV not available for your country than go for it. If you are dissident, journalist, activist, etc …than forget it – this company reveal all details about you on any government department request as they have to due US law. I think only way how HMA can survive is completely move their headquarters and company registration offshore to bahams, seychellas, hong kong, india etc as most ff EU,UK and US based companies cant unfortunately offer privacy anymore ….

Another aspect is their servers become very slow in last year..prolly because they are heavily monitored by FBI :-)

I’m using this VPN from China. In the beginning I was quite satisfied, but that changed 3 months ago.
Most of the servers are quite slow (less than 50 kB/s), except the servers in Singapore. But that’s where the problem starts. They have 2 servers in Singapore. One of them is nearly always offline and the other one doesn’t except any log ins.
I tried to solve this problem for nearly 3 weeks and in the end the support gave me the answer: “If you’re not content, you can ask for a refund. Please read our refund policy.”
The refund policy states that you can’t ask for a refund if you downloaded more than 10GB.
So my recommendation: Stay away and try to find another one!!!

I’ve used this product for the last 6 months. I cancelled my membership two days ago, and requested a refund. Out of my 16/2mb connection I got on average 2.5/.5mb max and the servers I was utilizing were under 50 miles from my house. So the service has very low speeds. The product is also plagued with random disconnects throughout the day, and night. I got on average 6 per day throughout the last 6 months, and sometimes, even more at night time hours. It would be a good service if it was actually reliable and could stay connected. I even sent an email to them asking for troubleshooting help and they simply said “just try different settings on the client and that should fix it”. Ridiculous, I’ll be searching for a different service now.

I’m a little new to vpn use but I have no shortage of business knowledge. I contracted HMA’s service to procure a secure connection to my USA based services while I travel abroad. I accessed my Paypal account using HMA’s service with the result that Paypal found that to be suspicious and place my account on “limited” status until i verified it. Of course HMA’s email warning not to use HMA to connect to Paypal came AFTER I had already attempted it and even though I verified my Paypal account within two days, there was a “charge back” to HMA without my knowledge.

HMA said there was a dispute placed on the order. I did not dispute it and in trying to rectify the situation (I was perfectly willing to use any other method of payment HMA would like), HMA said I would no longer be welcome to contract their services.

There are a million other VPN services out there that actually want my business and I am more than happy to give my business to someone else.

All this talk about speed. I have upwards of 12 servers to choose from within 250 miles. That said, why do I have to disconnect from my VPN in the evenings or weekends to regain decent download speeds? No…I know how to use the HMA software so don’t go there. Tonight, I was getting between 20 and 50 kbs down from the fastest server. Once I disconnected my speeds went up to between 400 and 500 kbs via my torrent client. Fast speeds my as s!! Only if you log on at 3 AM!! Not sure if I will renew at this rate.

The service stores logs for 30-days when it comes to Website proxy services, and they store the connecting IP address, as well as time stamps for those using the VPN offerings. Emails seeking comment on HideMyAss.com’s level of cooperation with the FBI, as well as to confirm what information was made available, were not returned.

I found HMA Pro VPN very easy to use and intuitive. The only drawback is the speed, it is very slow in Australia!! Connecting from Perth the closest server is Brisbane or Singapore. My internet connection is generally 15-20Mbps. Connecting seems to limit the maximum speeds to somewhere anywhere to 200-250kbytes/s. Something happens quite often (servers at capacity?) and the speed will struggle to get to 10-15kb/s which is basically unusable. Swapping between the servers will get a quicker speed eventually but it has to be done by manually picking a different server to find the fastest. Singapore tends to be faster than the Brisbane server…

For a comparison I just test a server in the US with speedtest.com from Perth with and without.
With HMAVPN connected (This is about as fast as it ever does):
    Ping:550ms, DL: 0.8Mbps, UL: 0.08Mbps
    Without
    Ping:450ms, DL: 4.65Mbps, UL: 0.65Mbps

For reference the results when picking a perth server rather than US:
    Ping:25ms, DL: 16.05Mbps, UL: 0.86bps

The only difference is that I’m using VPN everything else is the same, ie server I’ve picked, no software running on the PC.

I used their service for some time now. They really tried with their software and I can’t understand how anyone older than 5 can fail in understanding the basic use of their interface. Software runs 95% stable on Vista and Win7 (32and 64 bit) which I would say is very good, considering in how many instances something might go wrong.
Stability of bandwidth is another story. Sometimes I can be logged on to a server for half a day without needing to reconnenct and sometimes I can’t find a server near me giving me stability and latency <100ms (I'm in Germany). Also they have servers all over the world which can even accelerate a connection if one needs to download a lot from very distant servers.

    Pro:
    -Easy to use interface
-Incredibly cheap for a multi-location VPN service
-Servers in all relevant countries – i.e. for streaming videos and "not caring" jurisdictions
    -Constantly adding new servers

    Cons:
    -Instable bandwidth allocation
-Auto-Reconnect function is sometimes a bit annoying
-Application traffic block while VPN offline feature difficult to set up

    Conclusion: Best multi-location VPN service <10 Euro/month.

I found Jovan (the customer service rep) to be short on competence, manners, courtesy, and professionalism. I asked a simple question: \Was my account canceled?\ After which we went through an exchange of 8 troubleshooting email messages (plagued with crude language bordering on rude), all of which could have been done in one message, to eventually arrived at the conclusion that in fact my card’s fraud protection had activated and declined the order -which would have been immediately discovered if Jovan would have checked my order status from the start. There are cheaper VPNs out there. For the price, I expect politeness and efficiency from customer service.

    Hi,

I´ve switched to HMA from Perfect Privacy because I was in need for better performance and better pricing. HMA is really amazing, it´s feature-rich client which makes it easy to use OpenVPN capabilities and also the many server locations they offer, they are really one of the best out there. SMTP on request is also a great thing which Perfect Privacy couldn´t offer. They provide fast support and a very reliable service for just $78/year, comparing to Perfect Privacy who charge 149€/year. Try HMA for just 1 month if you are not sure and you´ll see what I mean.

    Kind Regards

Dubious – comes to mind. First a company Rep says his peice. Then there is a plethora of 5 star ratings.

It’s easy enough for any ambitious Rep to rate his own product under any nomdeplume.

I have found the customer service there to be great, even when I wasn’t a paid client they still were very helpful and gave me a free solution to my issue. I have found the vpn service the best for my needs over the free solution.

I have been using HMA for several Months now and have to say it’s the best VPN out there.

My speeds have been consistent and high even if I use their servers in say Estonia, Moscow or Ukraine.

The staff appear to be working hard in enhancing the application itself, releasing new versions on a regular basis. For example the new feature that disconnects your application if your internet connection drops is ideal if you want 100% privacy.

Yes, there are other VPNs out there and I’ve tried a large majority of them. In my opinion HMA is the best.

I’ve tested out many VPN services and none even compare to HMA VPN Pro service. All of the servers are top notch with unlimited bandwidth and servers around the world and constantly expanding and adding new servers and features to the client software that no other VPN company offers that help users bind applications to the VPN IP and the speed guide built in that tells you which of the closest servers is the fastest. Plus many IP changing options including automatic in chosen time frames.

I’m not sure why the reviewer only gave four stars for support when HMA has the best support team I’ve ever dealt with by any company, VPN or not. Should be five stars.

You can’t go wrong with this company and service. HMA’s business model supersedes all other VPN companies combined and they’re not stopping there, only getting larger and more powerful as a leader in the VPN market with no second place company in sight even coming close.

    Thanks

  • HMA says:

    Hi,

I represent HMA. We appreciate this review by BestVPNReviews and would like to address some of the cons listed.

    a) 128-BIT encryption

I would just like to point out that ’128-bit’ encryption should not be considered a ‘con’ just because there are stronger encryption methods out there.

128-bit is the industry standard level of encryption, e.g. go to https://google.com and notice they are using 128-bit encryption like 99% of websites out there.

128-bit is unbreakable in HMA openvpn unless you do a MITM (man in the middle attack) as by default it renegotiates the data channel key every 1 hr using 1024bit RSA (if you check your openvpn log – you will see it renegotiates every 60 minutes) so there’s no existing computing facilities or ‘hacker’ which can break 128bit that fast.

Accordingly to NIST SP-800-57, 128-bit encryption will provide adequate strength level until year 2031.

    b) Does not provide a fastest server in the application

Our VPN client actually has a built in speed guide which displays the fastest server for your connection. See the following forum topic for members reviewing this feature: http://forum.hidemyass.com/showthread.php?tid=1764

    c) Does not support IPv6

When our customers start to demand IPv6 we will look into it, for now 99.9999999999% of connections are IPv4.

    d) Not enough off shore servers

We have servers in 12 countries. It is hard to justify what ‘off shore’ means, but we are expanding into Asia this month, in fact a Singapore server is being installed as I type ..

    e) Logging policy

We must stress no logs are kept on any of the VPN servers and all logs are stored on a top secret ‘off shore’ location. We log the times you connect and disconnect, not anything sensitive like websites visited and your online activity. So when someone sends SPAM email for example we can locate the user and ban them. VPN services can rack up a lot of abuse and not taking action leads to disconnection of servers by the issuing ISP.

    f) Static IP’s

We are going to offer static IP addresses in September. For now every time you connect you will get a new IP as this is what the majority of our customers want.

    g) SMTP email

SMTP email is allowed upon request.

    h) Closing notes

    Thanks,
    HMA!

    P.S.
It said ratings were optional, but then after trying to make this post it told me I had to rate our service. Being a representative I could not rate us less than 5 stars ;)

About your logging policy and being in the USA,

Read the New York Times article dated 9.27.10:

      http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/27/us/27wiretap.html?_r=1

“U.S. Tries to Make It Easier to Wiretap the Internet”
Your US company will receive a court order and your defense will be that they don’t have access to company logs or that you don’t log. The US officers of your company will be in breach of a court order and liable to penalties and jail time. You are misleading your customers if you want them to believe that you wont cave in.

      To quote the article:
“No one should be promising their customers that they will thumb their nose at a U.S. court order,” Ms. Caproni said. “They can promise strong encryption. They just need to figure out how they can provide us plain text.”

      • Mike says:

And to follow up on this, news reports now indicate hidemyass gave up a LulzSec hacker via court order.

Any doubt, google news search is your friend.

        http://www.theatlanticwire.com/technology/2011/09/lulzsec-hacker-exposed-service-he-thought-would-hide-him/42895/

Regardless of ones feelings about LulzSec, its clear hidemyass keeps some sort of logging.

So as a true anonymous non logging proxy server service, it simply is not.

The log retention laws in the USA and UK passed in the last three years (HMA is based in the UK) have made this and any VPN based in these countries useless unless you are obeying all laws when using a VPN such as copyright regulations to name just one. And lets get real. If you are doing everything by the book, why do you need to hide your IP? You don’t. Actually, now that the subpenas and court orders have been submitted, the government(s) are probably watching everything the users of HMA are doing. So if you have a reason to hide your activities from the governments in the EU(basically all of EU has such laws now) or USA, I would recommend not using a HMA account. For example, if you were breaking laws outside the internet and you didn’t want to draw attention to yourself, would you walk the busy streets with all the law abiding citizens and blend in or would you hang out in places where all the criminals go? This is just common sense. The only reason HMA is still in business is because most people are uninformed. There are VPNs in countries where such log retention laws do not exist. Do your research and you will find them.
