Comodo TrustConnect VPN INTRODUCTION

Comodo Trust Connect provides a paid OpenVPN service for $4 per day or $120 per month. This is the most expensive service available on a monthly basis. The service is the standard OpenVPN technology with very few added features and the smallest server network reviewed – 3 servers in two countries: US and UK. The Privacy Policy does not protect the user and Comodo logs and collects data on its users. This is an expensive service with a small server network with few IP addresses and poor privacy policy protection for the user.

From Order to Installation: ★★★★½

With Comodo TrustConnect your account is up and running within 10 minutes hour if you use your credit card. I received my login credentials in a few minutes after my Checkout and was able to connect with Comodo TrustConnect a few minutes later.

Comodo TrustConnect provides you with an easy to use manual to download for Windows or Mac:

Comodo Trust Connect utilizes its own electronic download for the executable application. It runs quickly and there were no problems during the execution:

After you go through the quick download process you provide your login credentials:

This provides you with the OpenVPN sys tray icon in the lower right hand corner of your computer which you can use to connect and disconnect the OpenVPN GUI.

Software/GUI: ★★★☆☆

After download and execution of the Comodo Trust Connect program, you open the desktop application and put in your login and user credentials that Comodo Trust Connect created for you in your user account. . The entire procedure was quick and professional. After starting the software:

On the first try my connection failed, but the main point in showing this screen shot is to show that this is standard OpenVPN open source technology with no added layers of technology from Comodo. Comodo has simply taken the standard OpenVPN and adapted it slightly.

The connection failed because I used the wrong password. Comodo provides you with a service password that is actually only for getting into your member account. Your login for Trust Connect is the password you created during your checkout. Once I logged in correctly I get the green icon in the sys tray which I can open for the OpenVPN features:

If you click on the ‘Advanced Options’ you get the application which is simple but with few features:

best-vpn-review

You can select the best server which is the one with the least latency and server load or you can chose between 3 servers:

best-vpn-review

One in the UK and two in the USA.

The software lets you know your location and IP address but this is typical OpenVPN with few features and not very convenient. You basically have to run the application from the sys tray if you want to open the Advanced Options (which are not very advanced). So like OpenVPN standard procedure, you have to open the application with windows permission, open the GUI, click on options, click on advanced options, click on the server and select and then put in the login credentials. All in all 6 clicks to run the application. Not exactly convenient.

You know that you are securely connected when you see the green icon in the sys tray. If it’s yellow, its connecting, red and the VPN is disconnected.

Updates: Comodo Trust Connect provides automated updates which are based on Openvpn.org.

Ease of Use: ★★★☆☆

As this is the standard OpenVPN application, it is not very user friendly. It cannot be automated for startup of the computer and requires some 6 clicks to start each time. If one needs to restart this application a couple of times a day, it’s tiresome.

Features: ★★½☆☆

Comodo Trust Connect has all of the standard features of OpenVPN but has not added many application features of its own to the standard OpenVPN configuration. It has no automated features, choice of IPs or type of IPs nor does it automatically start on startup or automatically protect your connection when there is a failure of the underlying internet connection. If the underlying connection fails and turn back on, you would not realize that your applications that you turned on with VPN now are on your originating IP. The better (and cheaper) VPNs have better features and this basic OpenVPN application is a nuisance.

Comodo Trust Connect doesn’t offer dedicated IP option which complicates online shopping and banking as the merchants and third-party payment processors see multiple IPs which will trigger fraud alerts.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★½☆☆

Comodo Trust Connect has a network of 3 servers in 2 countries with OpenVPN. Comodo Trust Connect has servers in the US and UK. None of the servers are in non-cooperative or off shore jurisdictions so from a security point of view this VPN does provide you with true anonymity (if you use the off shore servers for sensitive activities).

Initially I connected with the US Atlanta server:

best-vpn-review

Example ping time from Atlanta, USA to Rotterdam, Netherlands was 113 ms.

best-vpn-review

Without Comodo Trust Connect the ping time was 114ms, so there was no latency on this server test at 3.30PM EST.

Keep in mind that VPN providers that are based in cooperative jurisdictions and have servers in other cooperative jurisdictions cannot protect your data as it is transmitted across their servers. By definition a court order in cooperative regions can force Comodo Trust Connect to log, cache and submit any information to local and international authorities not withstanding Comodo Trust Connect’s current Privacy Policy to the contrary (which is not helpful to the user in any event because Comodo states it would hand over its logs on request).

Recently the UK passed very restrictive data retention laws that may, in time, negatively impact on Comodo Trust Connect, particularly as they have servers in the UK and are a UK company with offices and management in the UK.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★★½

All presale questions are answered within one hour generally by form emails.

Post-sale support is done by a ticket system and responses come within 12 hours. The responses were helpful and comprehensive. But you wouldn’t need much support for this product because the tutorial and manual is good enough and the product sets up well.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★☆☆

Utilizing standard VPN protocols, Comodo Trust Connect changes your IP, removes packet headers and provides you with a dynamic IP generated from any of its servers. Each time you connect, you will receive another IP address. This is good security but it has the downside that if you want to connect to PayPal or to your credit card merchant with a VPN and your IP changes every time you connect, PayPal will likely put your account on hold because they are suspicious of changing IP addresses. Its best to use a VPN that provides both shared and a fixed IP so that you are safe but can deal with your shopping online in a convenient way. That said, if you are not shopping online with Comodo Trust Connect, it is a secure VPN.

Protocols: OpenVPN standard

Comodo Trust Connect does not support IPv6 or port forwarding. SMTP mail is not permitted.

Encryption: Pending Test

Encryption Strength Specified: 128 Bit

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of Comodo Trust Connect is in process and will be posted here when completed.

Open VPN provides 128Bit. Comodo Trust Connect chose the less strong encryption standard probably because it’s faster to implement.

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from Comodo Trust Connect.

Privacy: ★½☆☆☆

Comodo Trust Connect states: “We have logs of all system connections and will provide them to the proper authorities upon request”.

This means that even if before a court order, simply on request they turn over logs of all your outgoing connections.

Further: “Any information transmitted to Comodo through the site by a visitor is considered non-confidential and may be used by Comodo in its sole discretion.”

This means that your credit card information and all your personal data submitted at the site may be used by Comodo in ways you do not know. This is anything but privacy.

“Personal information is collected from customers only after obtaining consent, which is obtained when customers are prompted for information when subscribing to the services, by using a Comodo website, downloading a product, or requesting further information.”

Comodo collects personal information, stores that information and together with logged connections and IPs would provide that data upon request. Comodo does not pretend to have a privacy agreement to protect its clients.

Comodo is a UK company with offices in the United States. This company’s main business is SSL certificates and its VPN business is a minor aspect of its turnover. Comodo does not provide absolute privacy, either through its Privacy Policy or its jurisdiction.

To be completely secure, users should consider a VPN provider whose corporate headquarters are off shore to begin. Many jurisdictions are impervious to US and UK court orders. Comodo that is prominently located in the UK is not secure by definition.

Was under the assumption that I was hidden. Not the case. A reverse IP lookup shows not secure and IP lookup reports ISP. Issue in forums was dismissed by ignorance ie: Where did you get that information? It was from their connection view and the reverse lookup.
