Express VPN INTRODUCTION

Express VPN provides a paid OpenVPN plus PPTP service with a 30 day money back guarantee. This service has servers on the US, Netherlands and Germany only for the OpenVPN protocol.

Express VPN provides OpenVPN security with PPTP. It provides the basic OpenVPN standard utilizing the off the shelf OpenVPN software application in the middle of the market price range. Express VPN has a small network of servers in the USA and Europe. This review only covers Express VPN’s Open VPN service. The other protocol they provide will be reviewed later in the year.

Review Summary

Express VPN is in the poor range of the OpenVPN services because of it small server network and featureless software application.

The slow support response time, poor FAQs, difficult installation procedure for a novice and non user friendly software/GUI without any but the most basic features does not recommend this service as there are many other VPN services that are available at better prices with more features, larger and more secure server networks and a serious privacy policy.

Express VPN PROS:

• None

Express VPN CONS:

• Poor support, long response times
• Poor FAQs
• Difficult installation procedure if you want to be able to switch servers and control your IP
• Non user friendly software application, inconvenient to use
• Few features
• Small server network in few countries
• No automation on start up
• Expensive for what it offers

From Order to Installation: ★★★½☆

With Express VPN your account is up and running within 6 hours.

Express VPN utilizes its own version of the OpenVPN.org electronic download for the basic executable application:

Software/GUI: ★★★☆☆

Express VPN employs OpenVPN standard application with few modifications. The application is the unmodified OpenVPN format that requires it to be opened with admin permissions (Windows & and Vista), login credentials have to be entered for each launch of the application (no possibility to save password); server has to be chosen for each launch, as in full OpenVPN implementation. Click on this icon on your desktop in admin permission mode for Windows 7 & Vista:

Once you give it admin permission the OpenVPN icon will come up on your sys tray in the lower right hand corner:

Right click on the icon and the following menu comes up:

In this simple configuration you are limited to randomly connect to a Seattle or California server, but if you want to choose your server connection you will have to download Express VPN’s certificates and server files from their download library and manually place them in the Express VPN config file. For many users this may be too technical. An all-in-one installation directly from Express VPN’s download page would be preferable.

Updates: Express VPN appears to provide updates to its installation software which you would have to reinstall to update the VPN GUI.

Ease of Use: ★★★☆☆

As this is the standard OpenVPN application, it is not very user friendly. It cannot be automated for startup of the computer and requires some 4 clicks to start each time. One always has to restart the sys tray icon. If one needs to restart this application a couple of times a day, it’s tiresome.

Features: ★★★☆☆

Express VPN has all of the standard features of OpenVPN but has not added any application features of its own to the standard OpenVPN configuration. It has no automated features, choice of fast servers or other features that the better VPNs have and this basic OpenVPN application is a nuisance.

Express VPN doesn’t offer a dedicated IP option which complicates online shopping, PayPal and banking as the merchants and third-party payment processers see the use of multiple IPs which will trigger fraud alerts.

Express VPN provides an assigned IP to users but this is just a standard feature of the basic OpenVPN off the shelf application.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★½☆☆

This is a small server network in the USA and Europe. Servers themselves are not switchable on the fly. This is mainly for Asians and expats behind restrictive firewalls that want to watch TV or see Facebook outside of their region.

Express VPN Netherlands server to LA, USA 152 ms ping time.
Without Express VPN the ping time was 141 so the latency is not small (7%) at 7PM EST.

Express VPN provides all users with a shared IP but assign users an assigned IP which is standard with the off the shelf OpenVPN application.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★½☆

Presale questions are answered by email in about 24 hours. Post-sale support is done by mail (no ticket, IM or live support). The post-sale emails are answered within 3 days which can be annoying and if you need urgent support, you will not get it. Responses are straightforward but short and not always clear. FAQs are not extensive/poor.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★★☆

Utilizing standard VPN protocols, Express VPN changes your IP, removes packet headers and provides you with a single assigned IP from any of its servers. The dynamically allocated shared IP adds security by making sure your data packets are mixed up with everyone else’s as they exit Express VPN’s servers.

Protocols: OpenVPN, PPTP VPN

Express VPN does not protect IPv6.

Encryption: Pending Test

Encryption Strength Specified: 128 Bit AES

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of Express VPN is to be completed and will be posted here.

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from Express VPN.

Privacy: ★★☆☆☆

This service keeps server logs of your IPs, email addresses, credit card information and is a US company governed by US law. The TOS states that if they receive a request form US law enforcement they will comply without warning to the user.

Just a friendly warning they do log activities not sure maybe for a week or 2. Second issue is my 6 month service was disconnected after 3 weeks they claim it was fraud. Even calling them did not help since they don’t really provide actual phone support. Either way I decided enough is enough and inform my credit card services to get refund from the service.

I have been using ExpressVPN for about a year. Before I signed up, I specifically asked about bandwidth limits, which they assured was none. As I am in China, I used they LA server that they recommended for Asia clients. For the first 8 months it worked great and the servers were fast. Then, they added a few new servers, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. and the bandwidth speed suddenly dropped on the other servers. So, I started to use the Hong Kong server and everything was fast again. Then, I get an email from Express saying I used too much bandwidth on the Hong Kong server and they were taking it away from me for the remainder of the month. I complained and told them how they were the ones who told me there was no bandwidth limit. Well, this has now happened twice and their staff support has been less than stellar, so I’m now looking for a new provider.

Bottom line is, if you plan to use a lot of bandwidth, save yourself the frustration and choose another provider.

I am far from technically inclined and had no difficulties on three of my computers. The fourth presented a problem which was solved by support within 15 minutes of my email.
I can’t comment on the cost evaluation as I don’t find the service particularly expensive. But I will say the setup was the best I have experienced to date. Simple doesn’t begin to define the install. I simply downloaded the software and started it up. It configured itself. Possibly I am missing something more technical folks take note of but I am satisfied. Very satisfied. And grateful after having tried more highly rated services only to find out I couldn’t master the install.

I just bought the 6 month subscription…Being in China I need a VPN that works NOW and 24/7. After installation….I tried to connect to every single server they list and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM DOES NOT WORK! I have contacted their support desk HOURS AGO and no reply. I will give them another few hours and I will cancel the payment and dump this product and keep in shopping. I suggest that you do to.
