International Alliance (IAPS) VPN INTRODUCTION

IAPS is a server hosting company and domain registrar that also provides SSTP, PPTP and L2TP. They are phasing out OpenVPN in favor of SSTP. IAPS sells country packages but you are not able to switch from country to country unless you have combo packages which cost as much as $110 per month for 10 countries! This is the most expensive service for switching we have reviewed. SSTP is offered in 17 countries.

IAPS has an extensive network of servers but not many off shore servers and no technology of its own to implement a better SSTP implementation. This service is best suited to Europeans as it has a good Europe wide service with some off-shore servers for Europeans. The installation process is difficult and not user friendly and without any application, this service does not provide any features whatsoever other than your own OS’s options.

Review Summary

IAPS has an extensive network of servers but not many off shore servers and no technology of its own to implement a better SSTP implementation. This service is best suited to Europeans as it has a good Europe wide service with some off-shore servers for Europeans. One of the cons is the surcharge you have to pay for switching servers and countries. You then need to buy combo packages that are extremely expensive. A 10 country free switching combo package per month is 5 to 10 times more expensive than any other VPN service.

The installation process is difficult and not user friendly and without any application, this service does not provide any features whatsoever other than your own OS’s options. IAPS provides a good privacy policy.

International Alliance (IAPS) VPN PROS:

• One of the few services providing SSTP VPN, a new and secure protocol running on the HTTPS port
• No bandwidth limitations – Fair use policy
• Your IP is not revealed on accidental connection loss
• Automated VPN on start up
• Large and fast server network in 17 countries – best suited for Europeans
• Good privacy policy
• Supports IPv6

International Alliance (IAPS) VPN CONS:

• Complicated installation for most users
• Inconvenient for most users
• Switching servers is extremely expensive. You sign up to one country and can’t switch unless you purchase a combo package which is 5 to 10 times more expensive than the competition
• No software application just your own OS
• NO features and user un-friendly
• No automation on start up
• No automatic choice of fastest server (lowest latency)
• Dynamic IPs and Static IPs are available but you can’t switch between them

From Order to Installation: ★☆☆☆☆

IAPS’ product choices are hard to navigate and understand. In the FAQs they speak of OpenVPN plans but in their packages, there are no references to OpenVPN (it turns out they are phasing out OpenVPN in favor of SSTP). How are privacy packs different than VPN packages? There are no comparison charts of their product line to evaluate what you are buying. So it takes some time to understand what they are actually selling.

Choosing a payment method is also strenuous. The page starts off by saying you can pay by credit cards but Alertpay doesn’t accept them and Moneybookers which does, in this case only accepts a wire transfer. So you wind up going through this whole list one at time to find the CC payment method that works. What a pain!

best-vpn-review

This is a perfectly awful checkout. Every time you try to find the CC payment you have to go back to the confirmation page and start again. If I weren’t reviewing this site, I would have left a long time ago and found another VPN service. Generally what starts poorly ends poorly.

And on their store page they claim to allow Google checkout, but that doesn’t exist in the checkout page. At least that would have been easy.

best-vpn-review

IAPS should just state that they don’t have a credit card method other than through PayPal and PayPal may or may not take your credit card as they are not really a CC merchant, but just uses the service to get sign-ups for their normal PayPal accounts.

Well after all of that, they mail me that they are going to take another 24 hours to review the account. But they wrote on their checkout page that PayPal saves time. Hmmmm.

After 24 hours I finally heard back from them with the following instructions:

Step 1.) You will need to download 2 certificates. Go here in INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY: http://XXXXXX.VVVVVV

Step 2.) Click on “Download CA Certificate” and save it to your desktop.

Step 3.) Click on “Download Latest Base CRL” and save it to your desktop.

Step 4.) Click on your computers start button and in the search box type “mmc” and hit enter.

Step 5.) Once the MMC console opens, click on “File” and scroll down to “Add/Remove Snap-in…” and click on that.

Step 6.) Once the new snap-in box opens, highlight “Certificates” and click on the “Add” button.

Step 7.) Make sure the “My User Account” is selected and select finish.

Step 8.) Now go back and highlight “Certificates” again, click “Add” select “Computer Account” select “next” and select “finish”.

Step 9.) Now select “Ok” and you should be returned to your management console screen.

Step 10.) Expand the column pointing to “Certificates – Current User”.

Step 11.) Expand the folder entitled “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” and click on the “Certificates” folder.

Step 12.) At the top of the MMC console, click on “Action” and the “All Tasks – Import”.

Step 13.) When the certificate import wizard pops open, click “next”.

Step 14.) Now select “browse” and switch it to your desktop. Find your newly downloaded certificate named “certnew”. Highlight it and click “open”.

Step 15.) Select “Next”, then select “Next” again, and then select “Finish”. (Do not modify anything when clicking these.)

Step 16.) Now go back to your main MMC console, expand the section entitled “Certificates – Local Computer”.

Step 17.) Expand the folder entitled “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” and click on the “Certificates” folder.

Step 18.) At the top of the MMC console, click on “Action” and then “All Tasks – Import”.

Step 19.) When the certificate import wizard pops open, click “next”.

Step 20.) Now select “browse” and switch it to your desktop. Find your newly downloaded certificate named “certnew”. Highlight it and click “open”.

Step 21.) Select “Next”, then select “Next” again, and then select “Finish”. (Do not modify anything when clicking these.)

Step 22.) At the top of the MMC console, click on “Action” and then “All Tasks – Import”.

Step 23.) When the certificate import wizard pops open, click “next”.

Step 24.) Now select “browse” and switch it to your desktop. Switch the file finder from “x.509 Certificate” to “Certificate Revocation List” and then scroll down until you see “certcrl”. Highlight it and select “open”.

Step 25.) Select “Next”, then select “Next” again, and then select “Finish”. (Do not modify anything when clicking these.)

Step 26.) On your main MMC console, select “File” and scroll down to “Exit” and click on it. When the box appears that says “Save Console Settings to Console1″ say “YES” and save it to the default location it gives you. ***DO NOT MODIFY THIS SECTION AT ALL. LEAVE IT SAVED TO THE AREA THAT IS ALREADY PRESENTED TO YOU. CHANGING THE DEFAULT LOCATION WILL DESTROY YOUR CONSOLE!!***

Step 27.) Click on your computers start button and in the search box type “cmd” and wait for it to appear on the menu. When it appears, right click on it and select “Run As Administrator”.

Step 28.) When the black screen appears, type the following verbatim: “notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts” (without the quotes)

Step 29.) When the text file opens, look at the bottom of the page and add a new line directly after the preceeding line. Add the following ip address: 194.79.29.2 and hit your space bar at least 5 time and enter the hostname verbatim: XXXXXX.com

Step 30.) At the top of the text file select “File” and scroll to “Save” and select it. Once its saved, close the text file.

Step 31.) Type “exit” on the black cmd screen and hit enter and it should disappear.

10.) Destination Name: Moonlight SSTP
11.) Check the box at the bottom that reads: Don’t Connect Now.
12.) See Above For Your Username and Password.
13.) Check the box that says “Remember This Password”.
14.) Click on “Create” and then click “Close”.
15.) Now Go Back To Your “Network & Sharing Center” screen.
16.) Now Click on “Connect To A Network”
17.) Find The VPN Connection You Just Created and click on it.
18.) Click on “Connect” and then click on “Properties”.
19.) Click on the “Security” tab.
20.) Set Type of VPN To: SSTP
21.) Click on the “Options” tab, then select “PPP Settings” and make
sure all 3 boxes are checked.
22.) Select “ok”, select “ok” again, and then select “Connect”.

As you can see this is a rather complicated set up with no installation software or manual. Of the VPN services reviewed, this had to be the most unfriendly installation and most difficult to implement if you have not done it before. Once you do it, it’s pretty straight forward. The least they could do is provide screen shots of the steps.

First you have to download the security and country certificates much like OpenVPN requires in its standard open source setup.

Well, to help our viewers, here is how to set up your SSTP connection for Windows Vista (similar to 7) with screen shots (something IAPS should have provided themselves):

Right Click on Network and click menu item “Properties” on popup menu:

best-vpn-review

Click “Set up a connection or network” on Network and Sharing Center, then Select “Connection to a workplace” on setup wizard, then click “Next”:

best-vpn-review

Choose “No, Create a new connection” and click Next, then Click “Use my Internet connection (VPN)”:

best-vpn-review

Enter the internet address provided to you by IAPS, set Destination name: XXX VPN and check “Don’t connect now; …”, and Click Next:

best-vpn-review

Enter the username and password of your account, and then click Create:

best-vpn-review

Click Close to close the connection setup wizard. Then go back to “Manage network connections” on Network and Sharing Center, right click on the VPN connection that was just created and click “Properties” on popup menu:

best-vpn-review

In properties, click on the Tab “Networking” and change the “Type of VPN” to Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) and click OK:

best-vpn-review

Then click “Connect” to connect to the IAPS SSTP VPN server.

Then you should see the pop up showing your computer registering itself on the network:

And La Voila, you are connected with SSTP.

Software/GUI: ½☆☆☆☆

This service does not provide a software application. You utilize your own windows software.
In our view the download of certificates and installation set up is burdensome and unusable by the majority of users. Applications are developed by VPN services to make life easier. In this case, inconvenience rules.

Ease of Use: ★☆☆☆☆

As this is a Windows application (or whichever OS you are operating), it is not very user friendly. It cannot be automated for startup of the computer and requires some 5 clicks to start each time. If you want to switch servers, you have to change everything manually. If one needs to restart this application a couple of times a day or switch servers, it’s tiresome.

Features: ★☆☆☆☆

There are no features found in an application such as simple switching of servers, changing IPs from dynamic to fixed IPs. The only features available are those found with your own OS, so you can automate the start up with SSTP.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★★★½

This service has a large network with servers in 17 countries: USA, UK, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Australia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Finland and Lithuania.

Our ping tests of 3 servers produced very good results. It appears that the servers are fast and that SSTP is as fast if not faster than OpenVPN.

It would be better if IAPS had servers off shore within few hops of the USA for American users.
Using European servers provides too much latency for US users. This service is best suited to Europeans as it has a good Europe wide service with some off shore servers for Europeans.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★½☆

All of the support appears to be handled by Jared, the manager of this service. He can either be friendly and helpful or ignore you depending on how he views you. This service is not very commercial and could be called: ‘Pals of Jared’.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★★★

IAPS states that SSTP, because it runs on the https port, is more secure than OpenVPN and is not blocked by any countries. It does sound reasonable that no country can afford to stop https connections because to do so means stopping all their financial transaction traffic. From our research it appears that SSTP encapsulates PPP packets over the https session and is substantially the same as OpenVPN but over an https session. SSTP is as stable as OpenVPN.

You can specifically request either a static IP address that never changes or request to be put on a server that handles dynamic ranges and will provide you with a different IP address each time you sign in. The problem is that IAPS does not provide you with the choice between Dynamic IP Servers and Static IP servers in the same plan so you have to specifically request one or the other on sign up. This means you if you are on a static IP which is very useful for use with PayPal accounts and Credit Card vendors, it is less secure than dynamic IPs. It’s preferable to switch between the two types of IPs.

Protocols: SSTP VPN is offered in 17 countries.

When asked about the OpenVPN offered at the site and in an email to us, Jared of IAPS writes:

“OpenVPN is currently being phased out in favor of sstp vpn service. Whereas OpenVPN can be blocked just the same as typical PPTP and L2TP/IPSec. However, since SSTP runs on the secure port 443 (https) it is not blocked in any countries that we have seen so far, including your hardline communist/dictator countries. We feel that the future will call upon SSTP many more times than it will for OpenVPN.”

SSTP does support IPv6. Does not allow P2P.

Encryption: Pending Test

Encryption Strength Specified: 256 Bit

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of IAPS is in process and will be posted here when completed.

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from IAPS.

Privacy: ★★★★☆

IAPS provides the following Privacy Policy summary:
“Sell, trade, furnish, or give up our clients registration information (except in fraud cases).”
If IAPS makes this statement it means they cache the registration information and they also have the originating IP. They do not state in their privacy policy that they don’t cache or log, only that they don’t put persistent cookies on your computer.
IAPS also states:
“Proxied orders (orders placed under proxied ip addresses) will not be accepted at any time, whether knowingly or unknowingly.”
If this were truly absolute privacy, they would not care if the orders came under a proxied IP. Why can’t you open an account with a proxy? Because they want your IP in case you do something wrong.

For some users, they prefer to have an address and know whom they are dealing with. But IAPS doesn’t disclose their location which is good from a privacy point of view because it makes it more difficult for third parties to attack their service by subpoena or otherwise.

I’ve used IAPS for about a year now. The connection was great at first but around the beginning of this year the servers were down and no one from IAPS would help me out. Eventually I got into contact with Jared – he was extremely rude and condescending giving me short replies and being an overall prick. When service was “restored” I started dcing from it repeatedly and Jared would only help me with one word responses. Furthermore their servers aren’t where they claim they are located – they just mask their true location thus offering fast speeds out of Europe. I strongly urge those to stay away from Jared and IAPS – its a 1 man show over there and if you ever need technical support good luck talking with the genius.

By far the worst customer support experience ever!

Out of 6 months of services acquired, for a total adding up to one month I was not able to use their services. Customer support is nowhere to be found and when they do show up the replies you receive are arrogant and rude. They are far too busy doing something else than providing services to the customer.

STAY AWAY: find another provider who cares about its customers and who offers similar services at much cheaper rates. Their offer is by the far the most expensive one on the market and the value you get in return it is simply not worth it…

I am not in anyway related to the supplier of this service.

The wait of 24 to 36 hours after payment is stated explicitly on the website. This is to prevent fraud. Please read the information there before posting this kind of comment.

I have used the service for 3 months now. The support is superb as is the service. I would say that this supplier is for the discerning technically advanced user who knows what they want. The supplier of the service is however able to adequately help subscribers with little or no technical knowhow. I recommend this service wholeheartedly.

    1. The software is inconvenient and difficult to use. The fact that you have combo offers doesn’t repair the software and installation process and user unfriendliness.
    2. There are companies that provide ease of use software with 20 plus country switching. So your comment is not accurate.
    3. Other companies do provide secure https connections to member areas and other sensitive areas of their sites as well as authentication certificates. This does not make up for poor installation and unfriendly software.

I’ve used IAPS for more than 2 years now. I find your evaluation of their services very inaccurate to say the least. They do offer automatic dialer software as well as an 18 country switching service (https://www.intl-alliance.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5) which is far more than any of these other companies.

Additionally, this is the only vpn provider that carries a green bar ssl so you are assured of their corporate identity as well as the 2 seals they carry on each side of their store (https://www.intl-alliance.com/store) which clearly state they are a secure site. I think its only fair you update your evaluation to provide current and relevant information as what you have posted here is very incomplete.

Whoever posted that gibberish comment above about bandwidth plans has no idea what he or she is talking about as this company has never sold specific data plans. Thats also very inaccurate. As your hosting a review site here, please try and be a bit more accurate in your company evaluations.
