Ipredator VPN INTRODUCTION

Ipredator, based in Sweden, provides a premium PPTP which is enabled by the OS of your computer as Ipredator does not provide any software of its own and therefore has no features. Ipredator has a small network of servers in Sweden, Switzerland and Austria with no country server switching. The premium service costs €5 per month but OpenVPN services with software with substantial features, better security and large international server networks are available for similar pricing. This service is just not that competitive because it’s PPTP.

PPTP is widely regarded as being far less secure than OpenVPN and its weaknesses have been exploited widely by hackers, including the fundamental weakness that it is only as secure as the password chosen. Today, distributed attacks against passwords are generally feasible. PPTP has seen a decline in use. Our recommendation is to switch to OpenVPN.

Review Summary

Ipredator VPN PROS:

• Unlimited bandwidth
• Privacy based on Swedish privacy laws – debatable privacy

Ipredator VPN CONS:

• PPTP has been shown to be insecure and superseded by OpenVPN
• Expensive when compared to secure OpenVPN services with substantial features
• Idle connections terminated every 10 minutes, leaving you with your originating IP revealed
• You have to restart the PPTP client software every time you restart your computer
• No country server switching – you are on whatever server Ipredator randomly switches to
• Software standard PPTP with NO features and user unfriendly & inconvenient
• No automatic choice of fastest server (lowest latency)
• Dynamic IPs and Static IPs not available
• Fair FAQs
• Does not support IPv6 – In fact your originating IP is revealed on IPv6 with PPTP

From Order to Installation: ★★½☆☆

With Ipredator your premium account is up and running in a few hours. The only problem is that you have to install this using your own OS and there is no separate software application and you have to restart the client software every time you reboot your computer.

The installation process begins from your control panel from where you click on ‘Network and Internet’:

Next click on Connect to a network and then click on Setup a connection or network:

ipredator-vpn-review

Next, connect to a workplace – set up a VPN connection to your workplace:

ipredator-vpn-review

Next click – Use my Internet connection (VPN):

ipredator-vpn-review

Next you enter the server information you received from Ipredator. This is the internet address of Ipredator’s servers. In destination name you can enter the name of the connection which will then show up in the ‘Connect to a network’ screen when you have completed the process. Also don’t forget to click, ‘Don’t connect now, just set it up so I can connect later’.

In the next screen, enter your VPN account username and password, and then click ‘Create’:

This will cause the following connection is ready to use screen to come up:

Then go back to your control panel and click on a network again and click on the Ipredator connection and click ‘Connect’ and you should have a PPTP connection.

Software/GUI: ½☆☆☆☆

There is no Software/GUI, you can only use your OS with PPTP. You have to restart the client software every time you reboot your computer.

Ease of Use: ★½☆☆☆

As this is the standard PPTP application, it is not very user friendly. It cannot be automated for startup of the computer and requires some 5 clicks to start each time you have to restart the client software every time you reboot your computer. If one needs to restart this application a couple of times a day, it’s tiresome.

Features: ★☆☆☆☆

Other than the connection PPTP has no features.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★★☆☆

This service has a small network with servers in Sweden, Switzerland and Austria. There are no servers in off shore locations and you cannot switch country servers or IPs.

Initially I connected with the Swedish server and the ping time for this server was with 5% latency compared to other VPN servers. The servers are generally fast. PPTP is inconvenient to use because you can’t switch country servers conveniently, switch static to dynamic IPs and has no features of the other services that provide OpenVPN with many features, better security and a large international server network for the same 10 Euro per month.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★½☆

Presale support and Post-sale support is done by browser email. Response time was a few hours.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★☆☆☆☆

Utilizing standard PPTP protocols, Ipredator changes your IP and provides you with a single assigned IP from any of its servers. Ipredator does not provide you with the choice between Dynamic IP Servers and Static IP servers which is very useful for use with PayPal accounts and Credit Card vendors.

This is the weakest of the current encrypted connection protocols and not advised for use as it has been regularly hacked through password attacks and via the IPv6 channel.

Protocols: PPTP utilizing the OS of your computer

The VPN Tunnel is a dynamic IP address. Ipredator does not provide Static IPs
SMTP Port is closed and you have to disconnect to the VPN service in order to send email

Ipredator cannot support IPv6 because one of the main attacks for seeing originating IPs with PPTP is through IPv6. So you have to have IPv6 turned off and only use IPv4.

Encryption: Pending Test

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of Ipredator is in process and will be posted here when completed.

Encryption Strength Specified: 128 Bit

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from Ipredator.

Privacy: ★★★★☆

Ipredator states that it is a company incorporated in Sweden and that it is a Swedish broadband subscription offered over the internet and that this means the legal framework for privacy is based on the Swedish Electronic Communications Act 2003 which governs what happens if the Swedish authorities or other individuals demand access to information held by Ipredator:

“Ipredator VPN service enjoys the strongest legal protection possible under Swedish Law because of the service type (pre-paid flat-rate service). This means that Ipredator do not have to keep an ordinary customer database (to be able handle transactions etc.). This is of importance if forced to hand over information.

If Swedish authorities can prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have a case for demanding subscription information from Ipredator (they have to be of the opinion that if convicted the user will be imprisoned – fined not enough). .

Ipredator then have to hand over the subscription information entered by you (but that’s all). Ipredator do not store any subscription information about you except what you entered yourself when signing up for the Ipredator VPN service.

For Swedish authorities to force Ipredator to hand over “traffic data” including your Ipredator IP at a specific point in time, they will have to prove a case with the minimum sentence of two years imprisonment.

Regarding inquires from other parties than Swedish authorities Ipredator will never hand over any kind of information.”

But since the Act of 2003 there has been substantial changes in Swedish Law:

Sweden has the toughest anti-piracy laws in the world. So if you plan on using their servers for any form of intellectual property infringement, forget about it. When the law was enacted at the end of 2009, Swedish web traffic plummeted to about 50% of its previous level, suggesting that up to half of all Swedish web traffic in the past was involved in illegal downloading.
Initially Sweden had the toughest privacy laws in Europe: ‘Traffic data that belongs to natural persons or subscribers and is stored by the party providing the service must be eliminated or prevented from being identifiable when that data is no longer necessary to the transfer the electronic message.’ But due Russian cyber attacks much of that changed in 2008-2009. The Swedish National Defense has the right to intercept all Internet and other e-traffic crossing Swedish borders from anywhere. Covered by the law is all Internet traffic and telephony traffic, which includes all e-mail, phone, and fax messages. The Swedes call this the ‘Big Brother’ law which makes privacy reliance on the 2003 Swedish law questionable. Sweden shares it’s intelligence with all of its allies in the EU and the USA. So reliance on Swedish Privacy laws may be misplaced.
At the end of the day with a service that provides you a limited number of country IP addresses, you are in their hands. If they don’t log and cache AND Swedish privacy laws are not used against this service, then you should be just fine. But do you really want to put your privacy in the hands of any VPN service, no matter how benign they appear because of what they state on their site? I don’t. I would rather not have to rely on a limited number of IPs or privacy policies of service providers and not have to read up on the laws of major European governments. Tomorrow the law could change. Are you going to stay on top of the changes?

It’s much better to use a VPN Service (OpenVPN and not PPTP in any event) that gives you many exit servers throughout the world with hundreds if not thousands of dynamic and static IPs who’s country of jurisdiction is not a major European country or the USA. Then I can switch servers and IPs at will and not worry about Big Brother. That’s absolute privacy.

    OpenVPN (Viscosity) version is SLOW.

Like the other comments, moving to OpenVPN we’ve dropped from somewhere between 300k to 1000k down to 10k to 60k. And we’re not happy… we were happy before ‘upgrading’.

It’s gotten much, much better. New servers, etc. You will have to figure out the tech part, yourself, though, and disable ipv6, because you will not be annon without that. ipv6 is a setting that is easily accessed and needs to be turned off or you are not really being ‘private’ at all…

After using IPREDATOR, my torrent download speed slows down BIG TIME. I was getting 1.5 to 3 MB/s without IPREDATOR VPN. Now I am only getting around 100 to 150 kb/s.

I didn’t expect VPN to slow down my download this much. For your info, I am on a 50MB/s uplink and 5 MB/s fiber link and I am connecting from Taiwan to IPREDATOR server.

I got a Macintosh, and i had to go in config to lower the MTU to 1400. Sometimes, i have downtimes while browsing the internet. I have something like 250Kb/s download when my ISP offer me 580kb.
Today, the VPN broke down in the middle of a session and i was very upset about that.
Actually if the service bandwidth would have been stable, i wouldn’t have any complaints. But it is going up and down all the time. Furthermore, i had to lower the speed because of MTU. It works better with windows.

I don’t advise this service for mac users.

Avoid this piece of junk like the plague.
1). No software. Have a problem installing it? Forget it, no tech support. You can email them endlessly, you’ll never hear from them unless you totally luck out. I was down for 3 full days and they never got back to me.
2). You can’t get 1 mo. trial, it’s a 3 mo. commitment, which is a bad sign right off the bat. If you still want to try it, put it on paypal, they offer a 30 day money back guarantee.
3). Snags something horrible, especially late at night NY Time. Sometimes I can’t even get my homepage (google) to come up. Youtube is a nightmare and downloading videos is a nightmare. Once you shut IPredator down, everything speeds up.
4). See #1. NO TECH SUPPORT. NO CHAT. NOTHING. Their homepage is a joke.

Completely useless operation to deal with. Sure, it works, it’s cheap, but their tech. support is completely non-existent, they answer NOTHING. I had questions in the beginning, no response. Finally something went wrong with it so now it doesn’t work, I consulted with my IP, they suggested reinstalling the software (which they don’t supply). I wrote them repeatedly asking for help, finally telling them I was doing everything to cancel through Paypal and get a refund pro-rated. NO REPLY. I’m so angry with them at this point that I’m going out of my way to get the lousy $5 back simply to generate paperwork for them to deal with. Stay as far away as possible.
