MyVPN Pro INTRODUCTION

MyVPN Pro provides PPTP or IPSec/L2TP security. In each case you have to configure your current connection but don’t need to download an application. MyVPN Pro has a small network of servers in the USA and Netherlands. The service charges $10 per month to use this service which is comparable to better OpenVPN services that provide applications with important features.

Review Summary

MyVPN Pro provides PPTP or IPSec/L2TP without an application on a small server network with servers in the US and Netherlands.

The installation procedure for a novice and without a software application (PPTP &IPSec rely on your computer software) and without any but the most basic features makes this service less competitive than OpenVPN services. For the same price as OpenVPN, I would go with a good OpenVPN service with software that has powerful and important features for the secure minded user.

MyVPN Pro PROS:

• No application/software to download
• Unlimited free switching of servers
• Unlimited bandwidth
• Good Privacy policy

MyVPN Pro CONS:

• No features
• Non user friendly software application, inconvenient to use
• No automation on start up
• Very limited server network: USA and Netherlands only
• Dynamic IPs and Static IPs not available
• No automatic choice of fastest server (lowest latency)
• Does not protect your originating IP if the internet connection fails. All your applications will be switched to your local IP and you may not know it.
• No off shore servers
• For the same price as OpenVPN, I would go with a good OpenVPN service

From Order to Installation: ★★★★½

With MyVPN Pro your account is up and running within a half hour. You first need to register to log in to your account information and from there you can purchase the service.

For either protocol, you connect to a private network through Window’s network center (this is an example for PPTP):

Software/GUI: ½☆☆☆☆

This product does not come with an application.

Ease of Use: ★★★☆☆

As this is the standard PPTP or IP Sec/L2TP service, it is not very user friendly. It cannot be automated for startup of the computer and requires some 5 clicks to start each time. One always has to re-choose the server and write it in the VPN connection properties. Who wants to deal with that a few times a day? If one needs to restart this application a couple of times a day, it’s tiresome.

Features: ★★★☆☆

The standard use of these protocols provides port forwarding for PPTP and server switching, but because this is not a proprietary application it has no features to speak of.

To switch a server you need to write the other server’s name in VPN connection properties. So there is nothing automated about this process and it’s not very convenient or useful.

MyVPN doesn’t offer a dedicated IP option which complicates online shopping, PayPal and banking as the merchants and third-party payment processors see the use of multiple IPs which will trigger fraud alerts.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★½☆☆

This service only has servers in the USA and the Netherlands.

MyVPN Pro Netherlands to LA, USA 1.18 ms ping time:

Without MyVPN Pro the ping time was 1.11, so there was little latency on this server test at 7PM EST.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★★☆

Presale questions are answered by email in about 20 minutes. Post-sale support is done by mail (no ticket, IM or live support). The post-sale emails are answered within a half hour and are informative and to the point.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★★☆

Utilizing standard VPN protocols, MyVPN Pro changes your IP, removes packet headers and provides you with a single assigned IP from any of its servers. The dynamically allocated shared IP adds security by making sure your data packets are mixed up with everyone else’s as they exit MyVPN Pro’s servers.

Protocols: PPTP or IPSec/L2TP
Allows P2P in the Netherlands only.

Encryption: Pending Test

MPPE 128bit encryption algorithm for PPTP. L2TP over IPSec uses 168 bit 3DES encryption protocol on Windows XP/Vista and 125/256 bit AES protocol.

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of MyVPN Pro is to be completed and will be posted here then.

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from MyVPN Pro.

Privacy: ★★★★☆

MyVPN Pro states:
“Our policy is very easy. We do not collect any information except one that our customers fill in while signup. Payment information is stored by PayPal.”

Although the stated privacy policy appears good, the fact that this service only has servers in the US and the Netherlands is a negative. Data retentive laws in both countries are strong and the provider can be easily ordered to log and cache without users’ awareness. I would be much more comfortable if this service had some off shore servers not just in major restrictive jurisidictions.

What is important is that users need not rely on the privacy protestations of VPN services. Many services claim that because they don’t log or cache, user’s data is safe from regulators or third parties. But one cannot know for sure if the service logs or caches but you can be sure that if legally enforced, a VPN service will log and cache and a government agency may have access to all the data on a specific server (not just of the target but ALL the data if ruled by a Judge). To be completely secure, choose a VPN provider whose corporate headquarters are off shore to begin with. USA VPNs that are also ISPs or are prominently located in the US or Europe are not secure by definition.
