This is a solid service with an easy to use software product with many features and an extensive worldwide server network. The free trial version is the same as the pay version but is limited by time.

VPN4ALL Basic has a large number of servers including well placed off shore servers. The software application has many features and is simple to set up and use. The Privacy Policy is very good. We tested this service for its encryption and found that their connections are in fact encrypted. The service also provides Kaspersky antivirus, antimalware and other add-ons as additional protection from their servers.

Full Review

From Order to Installation: ★★★★★

With VPN4ALL your account is up and running within minutes if you pay by credit card or PayPal. I received my serial number a few minutes after my checkout and was able to connect with VPN4ALL a few minutes later.

VPN4ALL utilizes its own electronic download for the executable application. It runs quickly and there were no problems during the execution:

vpn4all-review

Then install:

vpn4all-review

When you finished installing the application automatically opens and you put in your license number they sent you by mail:

vpn4all-review

You activate the application with your license number and then can create login credentials just for the members’ area. The login credential is just for the members’ area and the software no longer requests any other credentials, just like antivirus. I like that a lot.

VPN4ALL provides you with a convenient icon on your start up menu as well as on your desktop. From the icon you can open the desktop application or exit the VPN program.

Software/GUI: ★★★★★

After download and execution of the VPN4ALL program, you open the desktop application and put in your serial number credentials that VPN4ALL sent you by email on receipt of payment. The entire procedure was quick and professional. I liked the fact that this was a license number credential and I don’t have to deal with login credentials every time I start the program.

After starting the software:

vpn4all-review

You get a very slick application that provides many features. From the Options menu on the application, you can change user settings, upgrade the software or purchase different plans or get help through the support desk:

vpn4all-review

This is the first application that we have tested that is not built for a techie but for the consumer.

The software lets you know your new IP address and the server location and from this application, you can change country servers:

vpn4all-review

You can make a specific server a favorite and have it automatically start up on reboot of your computer, or switch to the fastest server automatically (server with a green lightning mark signifies speed) without having to hunt for the fastest (lowest latency server); and you can choose a server to be your fixed IP which you can use with credit card companies and PayPal.

This latter feature is the first service that we have seen with this important feature. If you are using a dynamic IP with PayPal, the chances are that sooner or later your PayPal account will be frozen because PayPal and credit card companies want to see the same IP to determine its really you (misplaced transparency). With this service, you can choose one IP for your subscription period which follows you for use with online banking and merchants. For all other connections you can use a static shared IP which is the most secure.

To designate your favorite or anchor IP (fixed IP for use with PayPal):

vpn4all-review

A star determines your favorite server – an anchor designates the fixed IP.

When you choose a server and it is loading it looks like this:

With the green object moving back and forth until it becomes solid green and lets you know you are connected securely. If it’s red, you are disconnected.

If you change countries it provides the new IP as well as your local IP so you can see the difference immediately.

A really useful feature is that if the underlying connection fails, the software continues to transmit in encrypted mode and lets you know that the connection is failing by turning red both in the application and in the sys tray. At the same time the software blocks the Internet completely. This is very useful for those times your ISP goes down and you are on a site or application that you don’t want to be logged onto your own IP, so at least then you can close any applications that you don’t want seeing your underlying IP.

Updates: VPN4ALL provides automated updates.

Ease of Use: ★★★★★

This product is extremely easy to use and convenient with excellent features. It is the first VPN product we have seen that does not look like a beta product. It is by far the easiest to use that also has substantial features.

Features: ★★★★★

VPN4ALL has many excellent features including:

Easy to select country settings, choose a favorite server automatically and on start up, choose the fastest server worldwide with the lowest latency automatically, choose a fixed IP for use with credit card merchants and PayPal; go to support from your application, upgrade your plan from your application. VPN4ALL blocks your internet if the connection fails, thereby not revealing your IP. One of my favorite features is NO login. Like antivirus, this application registers your license number once and after that its click and forget. You could conceivably choose a favorite server and it will connect automatically on start up and you can forget about it. Your VPN would be on 7×24 like antivirus and you don’t have to deal with it.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★★★★

VPN4ALL has a network of servers in over 20 countries. VPN4ALL has servers in the USA, Costa Rica, Canada, UK, Romania, Latvia, Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark, Bulgaria, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and China. Five of the servers are in off shore jurisdictions and all the off shore servers are in locations not far from the major USA, European and Asian centers. Overall this is the best server network we have tested so far. It provides both servers in large jurisdictions with off shore servers in low latency reach of major centers. And all the servers tested were equal to or better to competing networks. Generally the servers are fast with low latency.

The server company is in the Seychelles, an off shore jurisdiction. This means that court orders from European, USA or Asian governments will not get very far and you don’t have to rely on the VPN provider for whether or not they will withstand against government pressure. Most won’t – believe me. They will save their skins before they even think of yours. So if you want security, make sure the company providing security is offshore. Even if you have nothing to hide, when servers are opened by court orders, all the data can be misused and appropriated and the unforeseen generally arises. Also most VPN services tested in the USA had very poor server security and therefore were at higher risk of hacker intrusion and the theft of everyone’s personal information. We think that large VPN services will have similar problems to many non VPN service companies and government agencies because of server network poor security even if the connection itself is encrypted.

It’s best to avoid server networks controlled by European or USA VPN services for this very reason. As an off shore provider, VPN4ALL provides real hardened server network security as well as jurisdictional security – very few VPN services meet that requirement. Also this service provides Kaspersky antivirus, antimalware, anti phishing and firewalls as a second layer of protection from their servers. They claim this reduces malware attacks on your computer.

Example server Ping time: VPN4ALL Germany, Frankfurt server to New York – 106 ms ping time.

vpn4all-review

Without VPN4ALL the ping time was 115ms, so there was no latency (actually negative latency) on this server test at 6.30PM EST. This is very fast crossing the Atlantic.

Within Europe, the latency was 70MS or less. This is the Ping test to Madrid from Frankfurt:

vpn4all-review

From Costa Rica, an off shore server to Florida, the Ping test is faster than most round trips to Europe of most networks we have tested:

vpn4all-review

This means that Americans can easily use the Costa Rica server as an exit server. Europeans can use the Bulgarian or Latvian or Russian servers and Asians can use the Middle East server or HK server. This mix of off shore and major center servers is ideal.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★★★★★

All presale questions are answered within one hour through their support ticket system.

Post-sale support is done by a support ticket system. They also have Skype chat available which is useful if you have any real time issues. They also provide Team Viewer online support to fix any problems in real time. Their email response was very quick, helpful and comprehensive. Their stated response time is within 12 hours but I had email responses within an hour and sometimes within minutes. Overall, this is excellent support.

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★★☆

Utilizing standard OpenVPN protocols, VPN4ALL changes your IP, removes packet headers and provides you with a secure static IP which means that all your packets will be randomly mixed up with other people’s packets on server exit. This is the best server exit security.

Protocols: OpenVPN

VPN4ALL does not support IPv6 or port forwarding. SMTP mail is permitted but the throughput is limited to stop SPAM.

Encryption: ★★★★★

Encryption Strength Specified: 256 Bit AES

We tested this service for encryption and found that the packets are indeed encrypted as advertised. (Some services claim encryption but are not – they are just proxies)

VPN4ALL claims 256 Bit AES enryption (not tested yet).

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from VPN4ALL.

VPN4ALL states about their servers:

“All Web Broadcasting Ltd. exit servers contain no information on them whatsoever. Their operating systems are disabled except for those enabled modules necessary for transfer of data. All Web Broadcasting Ltd. servers are secured with Linux hardening, firewalls, anti-spam software, anti-virus and anti DOSS attack software to prevent third parties from maliciously attacking Web Broadcasting Ltd. servers. Web Broadcasting Ltd. maintains its servers and network to provide the best possible privacy. Our servers are PCI Compliant for the highest grade of security.”

Sounds good, but we are in the process of testing these claims and we will post that information as soon as it’s available.

Privacy: ★★★★★

VPN4ALL Privacy Policy states that:

• We do not collect or save any personal information.
• We do not collect or save logs on your Internet activities.
• We do not censor or monitor your Internet activities.
• We do not censor or monitor your emails.
• We do not keep backup copies of your emails.
• We do not cache any data about your activities.
• We do not log any user activity (sites visited, DNS lookups, emails etc.)

Further they state: “We are located in a jurisdiction where Internet logs, personal information, account data and all client information is not required to be logged or cached, therefore any requests by law enforcement can be met without providing any information about clients or their data. Even a court order would not provide any personal data about subscribers.”

And: “All Web Broadcasting Ltd. exit servers contain no information on them whatsoever. Their operating systems are disabled except for those enabled modules necessary for transfer of data.”

This is exactly what we want to read but the most significant plus is that the service is off shore so that I don’t have to concern myself with whether they comply with what they write in the privacy policy.

Many users would prefer to have a service in their home country but VPN is the one service where you want to avoid just that. The further the jurisdiction from your home country the less likely snoopers and government agencies will be able to access the service’s records or force them to log and cache (not withstanding their privacy policy). You can get perfectly good service and attention from out of country services and the security is actually far securer then similar services in cooperative jurisdictions. Why? Because once agencies start to nose around into the data of servers, they don’t just stop at looking at what they purportedly received a court order for, they look at everything and that may include tax issues or expense reporting or other technicalities that can be used to create the basis for more court orders. So the rule of thumb is stay off shore with VPN services for absolute privacy and security.
