Your Freedom Premium VPN INTRODUCTION

Your Freedom provides OpenVPN-based service with different limitations of throughput. The only package on which you can watch video and use VOIP is the Unlimited throughput plan – the most expensive of the plans. User complaints appear to be mainly about not getting sufficient throughput on the servers. This service is unbelievably easy to be banned from as it runs indiscriminate scripts to catch spammers and other TOS breaches but which appear to catch just as many who are not in breach of the TOS (me included).

Complicated software and set up procedure of Your Freedom VPN may be off putting for many novice computer users. Unlike most services, Your Freedom has price plans based on the throughput bandwidth/second. So although overall bandwidth is unlimited, the throughput is based on price and for a fast service you are forced to purchase the most expensive plan for unlimited throughput. The basic at 256kbit/s per second is only usable for emails and if you use VOIP or video downloading (like most of us) you need the more expensive unlimited plan for E20 per month. This makes this service at the expensive end of the market. And most of the user complaints are with respect to limited throughput.

Since all the servers are in cooperative regions, this service is not secure by our definition of security. And the service runs scripts to determine if you are in breach of the TOS and shuts you off in a rather indiscriminate fashion. So if you paid for the service and you get cut off, Your Freedom VPN does not reimburse you. Considering how random these scripts operate, this service is too expensive to risk getting your account disabled and who wants to deal with the inconvenience.

Review Summary

Complicated software but with many useful features. Fast servers in a few countries.

From Order to Installation: ★★☆☆☆

The installation procedure comes in two parts if you want to use OpenVPN. You first have to download the OpenVPN program. At the Your Freedom download page, click on the download page and you are sent to the OpenVPN.org page to download and execute OpenVPN. This is a bit inconvenient because OpenVPN.org is less than easy to determine that you have the correct release for your Operating System. But once you have downloaded OpenVPN, Your Freedom executable is simple and straightforward, utilizing an electronic download from the site. It is written in Java and should work well on any PC.

Once the Your Freedom downloaded is executed, you go through the set up wizard which takes some time as there are a number of configurations that need to be set. This is quite lengthy and even Your Freedom in its user guide writes: “Let’s assume you’ve been able to make it work” suggesting that it’s not very easy:

You need to configure the wizard which includes proxy configuration (if you are behind a proxy), connection tweaks for regions that are difficult to connect to with this VPN service (Indonesia), and select a protocol. Then the program takes some time to determine which servers on the network you can connect to by HTTPS, HTTP, FTP or UDP. Generally Your Freedom provides you with a choice between these protocols or you can go with the default settings.

To choose a server during the installation process you must highlight one of the servers:

Then put in your login credentials and click next.

Finally your set up is ready and you can then go to the application itself to make further modifications including port forwarding. If you don’t get this far in the set up, Your Freedom suggests that you “ask a knowledge person around you how you can use the web proxy or try manual configuration”, not a very comforting support message.

Software/GUI: ★★★★☆

The Your Freedom Software is complex but has some very useful features. The status page allows you to connect on startup, reconnect after shutdown, enable encryption, and avoid using DNS and enable rekeying:

For server selection in the software itself, Your Freedom requires you to configure an automatic server selection based on your requirements:

From this configuration you are provided with a list of servers based on your requirements. I initially set the requirement to OpenVPN plus European and American Servers. In the next step you can start the connection and see the uplink and downlink traffic at the bottom of the software application:

The only problem I had was that the Your Freedom connection appeared to be on but I was not in VPN mode. After some playing around I realized the OpenVPN port 1194 was not open and in the Ports tab I remedied this:

And from there I was in VPN mode and my IP address had changed. Remember that you must open this application with Admin Permission or the VPN will not be in front of Windows 7 or Vista.

Updates: Your Freedom has automatic update facilities to update the program to the latest version when you start up the system.

Ease of Use: ★★★☆☆

Complex to set up and can be confusing to a novice VPN user. Once the set up is finished and you have the port settings configured correctly, the application is straightforward and easy to use.
Unfortunately you do not have access to ALL the servers but only those servers that are available based on your pre-configured requirements in the set up.

Features: ★★★★½

The software application provides many useful features including: automatically switch server, automatically connect on startup, reconnect after server shutdown, enable re-keying, change ports easily and port forwarding. Your Freedom provides some servers for P2P, IPv6 but has separate servers for VOIP.

Server Network: Location, Availability & Speed: ★★★½☆

Your Freedom has a network of servers in 8 countries, but as we wrote above not ALL of the servers are available to choose from. Instead, Your Freedom provides you with some of the servers based on your pre-configured set up requirements. This is limiting. Your Freedom has servers in 8 countries but their main servers are in the US, UK and Switzerland. Unfortunately none of the servers are in non-cooperative or off shore jurisdictions so from a security point of view this VPN does not provide you with true anonymity. Keep in mind that VPN providers that are based in cooperative jurisdictions (Your Freedom is based in Germany) and have servers in other cooperative jurisdictions cannot protect your data as it is transmitted across their servers. By definition a court order can force Your Freedom to log, cache and submit any information to local and international authorities not withstanding Your Freedom’s current Privacy Policy to the contrary.

Your Freedom provides you with a server load page so you can see the load and choose a server accordingly. Your Freedom supports encryption of IPV6.

Your Freedom UK server to LA, USA 160 ms ping time.
Without Your Freedom the ping time was roughly the same, so there was little if any latency on this server test at 8PM EST.

Presale Support to Product Help & Support: ★½☆☆☆

All presale questions are answered within 24 hours in a comprehensive manner.

Post-sale support is done by mail (no ticket, IM or live support). Their email response also takes about one day or so. Your Freedom claims that “the #1 reason why people usually no longer receive a prompt reply on the support email address is that we are very busy with mopping up after the spammers, calming down the providers, and answering all the useless complaints by spammers who got caught.”

During testing of this service, I received the following email from Your Freedom disabling and banning my account:

Our protection scripts believe that you have used your account with us to send mass email via a webmail service. Your account has therefore been disabled and your client installation has been banned (i.e. other accounts won’t work either with your PC).

In fact, I had not even used a web based email service when testing this VPN service. So I did what they suggested and ran oncare.live.com to clean up my supposedly bot net driven PC. Here is the screen shot of the results:

best-vpn-review

So I have no viruses or spyware, I’m not bot driven and I have one port open which is necessary to connect to the internet. It appears that the scripts that Your Freedom are running to protect themselves from spamming and other TOS violations are quite indiscriminate and paying for such a service puts you at risk to lose your money just one day after purchase. I wrote to them but one week later received no further help about this matter – they simply canceled the account!

Scope of Protection:

Protocols: ★★★★☆

Utilizing standard VPN protocols, Your Freedom changes your IP, removes packet headers and provides you with a dynamic IP generated from any of its servers. Although dynamic IPs are somewhat less secure than shared IPs, the overall security is still quite high.

Protocols: OpenVPN
Your Freedom protects IPv6.

Encryption: Pending Test

Encryption Strength Specified: 256 Bit AES

The effectiveness of any VPN provider is dependent on how effective is the encryption. Our independent encryption Test of Your Freedom is to be completed and will be posted here then.

Server Security: Pending Test

To be independently tested pending permission from Your Freedom.

Privacy: ★★½☆☆

Although this service claims that it does not log anything other than the IP addresses that you log on to with their service, the TOS suggests otherwise. You can be banned for reports of fraud and other activities that suggest they are logging your underlying IP as well.
